Ao Kia - Rayong SUP surfing in the Gulf of Thailand

Every SUP Adventure trip we do is full of surprises.  From the eager anticipation of whether we will find waves and how big they will be, to wondering who will be able join us this trip.  The fun begins from the moment we start loading the cars, what shall I take? , a Windsurfing Rig for the SUP, or a dedicated Windsurfing board? Take kites, will there be enough room to launch it, what if you have a problem with the kite on a strange beach? For sure the trusty SUP will be used and enjoyed, it is a must and it is the main reason for the trip. If there are no waves we will explore the coast or paddle to an island, if there is wind, we will put sails on the SUP boards.

Well, this time, we had no wind, just swell, beautiful glassy clean peeling lines on a sandy bottom.

Perfect for fooling around and learning without getting knocked around by heavy shore break or having to paddle far or wait long for the next ride.

Frank is the guy you can see in the video making us all look bad :)

He has been surfing for 30 years and ran a Pro Surf Charter Boat in Java, Indonesia. Even though he has spent years riding some of the best surf breaks on the planet, he still thoroughly enjoyed riding the SUP.  This was Frank's first time surfing on SUP's, he does train on flat water with SUP though.

I managed to take the key to Frank's Pick Up for a one way swim. So when we decided to stop for lunch, we found ourselves locked out with no phones, no money and no lunch!

Searching the beach, and praying to favourite god of the day did not produce the key, so I borrowed a coat hanger and we managed to enter the Nissan and retrieve our phones and cash.

I phoned "Tony" from Drifters Beach Cafe and he took pity on me and agreed to pick up a spare key from Frank's house and drive 1 hour on sketchy directions to come to the rescue.

The bad news: The key did not fit and we spent about 1 hour smashing the ignition open with a screw driver and Tony's home made Bowie knife, (which would make Croc. Dundee envious and Rambo nervous). In the end, the Nissan relinquished to the Bowie knife and we went back to surfing again.

Ended up being a blessing for Tony who got to do some of his best SUP surfing so far. Marcell, who you can see falling a lot, can surf but has never used an SUP before this, has decided to put in a few hours flat water practice before his next SUP surf experience. After a few hours of practice, he will soon be better than myself I believe, as his SUP skills merge with his traditional surfing experience.

Thanks to Starboard, we will soon have 10 different model SUP boards to try from at our club and will be bringing all the surf models on our next great adventure. So if you would like to try some different shape SUP boards contact us - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
