Why is Paddle-Board Racing is a great activity for you?
Each weekend, Windsurfers and Kite-boarders come to Blue Lagoon and other watersports clubs through-out Thailand, and depending on the time of year, they often go home with-out getting on the water. Especially the Kite-boarders who need more stable wind conditions closer to shore than the windsurfers require. With Stand Up Paddle Boarding - you always get to play and you can always get a fantastic work-out. Why SUP is fantastic for fitness training
Now every-time to you bring the family to visit your favorite water-sports centre, you can end the day, fighting fit and ready for a well earned meal and a good nights sleep. If it is windy, then the Wind toys are an added bonus.
Why join an SUP race?
SUP Races are a fun way to motivate your training, connect with other nature loving sports minded people and have a laugh at the beach or lake.
SUP racing is still very young in Asia, with Amara's at Blue Lagoon we keep it fun and simple and encourage complete beginners to get involved with our short relay style events.
A relay event, means you can stay lost in the crowd if you are shy, or you can power forward and help bring your team to victory once your fitness and technique improve.
We supply Boards, Paddles and Racing Buoys, all you need to do is arrive and register on the day. Please subscribe to SUP Newsletter above to hear about events.
Am I fit enough to join an SUP Race?
No way! - everyone ends the race exhausted, from first timers to advanced paddle-board riders. That is because it is so much fun, you use 100% of your energy with-out realizing it. We have people kneeling down, holding the paddle backwards, falling off, tripping over, (that was me) - basically the goal is to have fun, and share the sport with more people. Later as the events evolve we will have races to satisfy those who want to measure their progress against others also.
SUP Racing in Thailand - Brief History
The first ever SUP Paddle-board race in Thailand and probably in Asia was held at Lake Taco Bang Naa at Starboard Head Quarters in 2007. This SUP race was organized by Sander Blauw and was a fun day and a big success. Amara Watersports and Starboard Hosted the paddle-board race on Taco lake with the Wake Boarding Club using 12'6" Cruiser Paddle-boards.

2010 - The next SUP Race event was a bit of a non event - but thanks must go to KBA and race director Olaf Van Tol for making an attempt to host an SUP race in Hua Hin as part of the PKRA International Kite-boarding Word Cup. After days of waiting for a race time to be announced, and being informed that once again there would be no racing that day, 3 of the race ready riders drove to a nearby national park at Sam Rio Yot to make this short movie. On returning they were told that a race had been held as a practice, but not to worry as the points would not count. On the last day of the World cup, an impromptu surf event was held instead, which was great fun even as the waves died away to zero. These videos show some of the good waves for SUP riding in Hau Hin that were present in the days preceding the surf event. In the end, the race results were combined with the surf event results but no prizes for SUP were announced at the event closing party.

2011 - PKRA International Kite-boarding World Cup announced SUP race events to be held, plenty of news about the kite event, but we cant find any information on the SUP racing. If anyone has information on the results, please do let us know, so that we can update this brief history.
2007-1011 - Amara Watersports, together with Siam Surfdogs, Drifters Beach Cafe, Pattaya Days Blog, Lanta Paddle Sports and many great friends, organized SUP River and Island adventures and also sup surfing trips around Thailand. Many of these sup adventures have been made into very short movies.

2011 - May 15th - Amara Watersports and Starboard Host a Battle of the Paddle Style race in front of "The View" restaurant in Blue Lagoon Pattaya as part of the Starboard International Distributor Meeting - video below. This was so much fun, that Amara Watersports decided to host Battle of the Paddle style relay paddle-board races in Thailand as a monthly event. We ordered the lastest Starboard Cruiser 12'6" Boards for this and Starboard kindly sponsored us Buoys and Tents. The View Restaurant has been sponsoring great prizes for winning teams.

2011 - July 23rd Regular Stand Up Paddle-board races commenced with Amara Watersports at Blue Lagoon Pattaya, great fun day, can see some of the action in the July 2011 short movie (less than 3min.)

2011 - August 13th BOP style Relay Race - register by 4:30pm racing starts at 5.00pm at Amara Watersports Blue Lagoon - All welcome, no talent or ability required, just come along and compete and laugh or watch and laugh, (competing is more fun). Prize for winning team from The View Restaurant. Teams are put together on the day.

2011 - September 24th BOP style relay race - we provided training from 3.00pm then began racing at 4.30pm. This time on Jomtien Beach in front of Surf Beach Hotel between Soi 5 and Soi 6. All the kids from the Windsurfing Association of Thailand joined us, so it was a really fun event. Great photos from Pattaya Days here

2011 - October 29th SUP Race - Also in October, 2 Flood Relief Trips, Big School Group, a Rubbish Clean up day on Koh Sak, and paddled around the moat of Ancient Chang Mai in North Thailand.
2012 - January 29th - BOP SUP race at the 2012 PATTAYA CITY ASIAN WINDSURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS - This was Thailand's first International SUP Race to date. Amara Watersports sponsored a Staraboard Premium Carbon Enduro Paddle to Howard Chang from Taiwan who took first place. We had entries from 8 Asian Countries, several who had never been on an SUP before as you can see from this short but entertaining video.

2012 - Febuary 4th - Pete From Lanta Paddle Sports take his expidtion 31km from Koh Lanta to Koh Phi Phi using Starboard Blend Paddle-Boards, there is already interest in making this an annual SUP Race event. Read more about this event or watch the short movie

2012 - March 8th Annual Pattaya Bay Swim, Charity event - Amara Watersports provided SUP escort for the swimmers. This worked out to be an even better idea than we any of us expected. Riders on SUP's can see and be seen and offer close support without exhaust fumes. Need more riders for next event.
2012 - May Starboard Distributor Meeting in Hau Hin - 6 teams of 4 riders from Australia, Germany, Spain, Italy, Turkey, USA, Canada, Thailand and more had this fun BOP style race. The team I was in came first, managed to shoot this video.

2013 - March Stand UP Projects launch the biggest Stand Up Paddle Board event in Thailand to date in Phuket. Luke Remmers took first in both the 6km and 1km races. Money raised from the event went towards a building a skateboard park. Now that is cool. For more info see Stand Up Projects.
